Obon Festivals (7:30PM)
Summertime means many things for many people, and in Hawaii one of these is the highly anticipated season of bon dances throughout the islands. Obon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed spirits of one's ancestors. A tradition brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants, the dances are held at a different Hongwanji (Buddhist temple) each weekend from June through August. Many spectators go for the food alone (food booths as well as sales of cakes, cookies and other homemade treats made by local community members that can often only be found at events like this), but the real highlight is the arresting beauty of women of all ages in traditional dress who drum and dance. Bon dances are a fun family activity for residents and visitors that is not to be missed. On this weekend, the bon dance will be held at Kapaa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple. But please see http://hongwanjihawaii.com for festival dates throughout the summer and on other islands.
